Steel is where Ircon Ltd. started. The company was founded in Sofia in 1996 with its early work rooted in iron and metal structures, and its name records that beginning: IRON and CONstruction. Three decades later, steel remains at the centre of its engineering, in roofs and canopies, bridges, industrial supporting structures and conveyor systems.

Steel allows large spaces to be covered without intermediate supports. Over Bulstrad Arena in Ruse, Ircon Ltd. designed the steel structure of a circular, dome-shaped roof about 70 metres in diameter, with Eng. Vasil Mitev as lead engineer; the building was recognised in the 2015 Building of the Year competition. The steel canopies over the new stands of Ludogorets Arena and over Sector A of the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium in Sofia, and the steel structure of the athletics hall at Kamchia, are part of the same body of work.

For the Saharov–Liapchev road bridge in Sofia, a steel viaduct, Ircon Ltd. was both structural engineer and architect, with the aim of a solution that is structurally efficient and at the same time clear and aesthetic. Its bridge work also includes a truss bridge over the Litani River in Lebanon, which carries an irrigation channel, and a concept for a lightweight steel arch footbridge over Lake Pravets, with a slender form and suspended hangers.

In industry, steel carries equipment, materials and people. Ircon Ltd. engineered the supporting steel structure of a boiler producing 250 tonnes of steam per hour at Deven, and the complete steelwork and platework of the SCATS conveyor system for Dundee Precious Metals. In the galleries of the Chelopech mine, it designed the steel structures, hoppers and chutes of an underground ore crushing and sorting plant, together with almost 4,000 metres of conveyor galleries.

Not every steel project begins on an empty site. At Sofia Central Railway Station, one of the city's most emblematic buildings, Ircon Ltd. surveyed and assessed the existing steel structure before designing its strengthening in accordance with the Eurocodes. At Solvay Sodi, a series of surveys, assessments and engineering studies supported the maintenance and reconstruction of industrial steel and reinforced-concrete structures, for their continued use and improvement.
