BIM & 3D Design

Ircon Ltd. uses BIM and 3D design as part of its modern engineering and design capabilities. These technologies support the development, visualisation and coordination of complex projects and help bring together different technical disciplines within a unified design process.

Over the past 12 years, IRCON Ltd. has developed a specialised department focused on contemporary design technologies, with particular emphasis on quality, coordination and complex engineering environments.

The company's BIM and 3D capabilities have been applied to projects where conventional design methods were insufficient for the demands of the work. These include projects involving complex three-dimensional geometry, specific client requirements, brownfield environments, coordination between international designers and suppliers, and CAD/CAM requirements for steel contractors.

One model instead of many drawings

BIM, Building Information Modelling, means designing a structure as one shared three-dimensional model rather than as a set of separate drawings. Every beam, plate and connection carries its own information: its size, its material and its exact position. Drawings, schedules and quantities are produced from the same model, so a change made in one place is reflected everywhere it matters.

Coordination between disciplines and countries

When the structure, the equipment and the services are modelled together, clashes appear on screen long before they could appear on site. The model also becomes the common reference for designers and suppliers working in different countries. On the Kent renewable energy plant in the United Kingdom, and on power plants in Benin and Mali, Ircon Ltd. designed its share of the works in a BIM and PDMS environment, coordinated with the wider international project team.

From model to workshop

For steel contractors, the model can feed production directly. CAD/CAM data taken from it drives cutting and drilling machines, which is why a steel model must be exact to the last bolt hole. The same precision makes it possible to describe complex three-dimensional geometry, such as that of hoppers, chutes, platforms and curved roofs, where flat drawings alone are not enough.

Existing plants

In brownfield projects, new structures must fit among buildings, pipes and equipment that are already in place. A model of the existing conditions shows where the new work fits and where it would clash, before work begins on site.
